:- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Chris Joslin -- Informative yet hardly compelling : I have followed all of Dr Buttar's histories, both of the First and the Second World Wars. As time progresses I find them less and less interesting. There has been a steady drift away from anecdotes of combatants, and "settings within history" towards a very dry, and ultimately pointless, description of divisional movements on the Eastern Front. Does any of that really matter, except as a record of what transpired? Many names of commanders, and of units, are bandied about, yet precious little insight is given into the greater scheme of things, or, indeed, of the personal experience of war. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from Bayard B. -- Overall excellent book but gets bogged down in minor battles at expense of bigger picture. : This is an overall excellent book on the war on the Eastern Front in southern Ukraine in late 1943 through early 1945. The story begins after von Manstein’s successful battles and the retaking of Kharkov in March of 1943, and the succeeding Soviet advances to the south after the Battle of Kursk in the summer of 1943. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from John -- Pretty good : Pretty detailed look into the destruction of Army group south. The author does occasionally make very big assumptions to support his arguments. I’m not saying he’s wrong about those statements, or his conclusions, but sources would help and debate exist. He could use a lot more sources. None of his conclusions are new by now. Though he does provide insight into the thinking and growth of the Russian high command that is rarely talked about as a contributing factor to Russia victory. This review sounds kinda harsh but it is a very good historical accounting of major battles and some smaller actions with some new insights and info. 8/10. Read it. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Niels Henriksen -- Good writting : Just finished this book, the third of a trilogy about the southern part of the eastern front from 42 to 44 (this book covers 44). Excellent writing and a very good book. Takes you down to individual soldiers bloody and scary accounts just as he writes very good about the overall decisions made by the general staffs on both sides. I highly recommend this book.
