Always, in December: A Novel Customer Reviews
:- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Katie M. -- So So.... : I'll start with the good things. I loved the settings for this book, and enjoyed the initial meeting between Max & Josie. I even got into the Christmas spirit for a while! I also thought Emily Stone's writing was very good, especially as this was her first novel. I look forward to reading any of her future books. I am certainly not a good writer (as you will see from my review) so I admire all the authors out there that take the time to sit down and write a book for us to read. Love you all!!! I had a few issues with this book though. The most obvious for me was that it was such a copy of "Me Before You" by JoJo Moyes. I know the book said it was in the tradition of that book, but couldn't get past how similar they were. In fact, I pictured Josie throughout the book as the movie version of the girl in "Me Before You." Also wished Max wouldn't have used the "F" word so much. I felt it made him more unlikeable, and wasn't really necessary to the story line. The ending, while expected, was just a bit too harshly done for the readers. I didn't get emotional over the final letters. On a personal note, my mother died Christmas Day many years ago too, so I sympathized with Josie, but having said that, I do feel that since so many years apparently passed for Josie since her parents' passing, I'm not sure it was realistic that she would still be shutting down Christmas forever in the way she did to the point of not feeling like she could even gather with her remaining family in her hometown. Just my personal opinion. All in all, a so-so book, but a talented author and I look forward to reading more from her. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Susan -- Christmas tearjerker : This month was my turn to pick the #literarylovelies monthly book, and I felt a lot of pressure to pick a good Christmas book! I chose Always, in December and while, it was sadder than expected, I do think it was a great discussion book! ( Reviewed in the United States on December 23, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Chelsea Richardson -- A raw & real story that will break your heart : If you are looking for a heart warming holiday read you will not find it here. This story will break your heart and leave you in tears. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2021 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Emilio -- Not what I expected but that is okay! : As a thank you to Netgalley, I write this honest review. The premise of this novel posits that every December, Josie posts a letter from her home in London to the parents she lost on Christmas night many years ago. In this letter which has become a yearly tradition she updates her parents on her life. As Josie is dropping her letter off in the postbox she is then knocked over by a male on his bicycle. His name is Max and slowly becomes an integral part of Josie’s holiday. They experience Christmas Day together and have a romantic day filled with firsts ex. Ice skating, but importantly in creating a connection aside from grief. Josie wakes up the next morning having found a note from Max telling he left early in the morning and no word on returning or goodbye. The reader follows Josie to New York City and back across the Atlantic to the English countryside of Edinburgh. The novel centers around Josie’s choice in love, career, finding herself and relationship with grief. I appreciate the time given to exploring Josie’s relationship with grief in its many stages. I recommend this novel to those who enjoy slow-burn romances and thoughtful stories. I understand why recommenders would characterize it to One Day in December, but it is not as light and frilly but holds a deeper tone. Out of five stars I gave it a 3.5 and on goodreads rated it a four out of five. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2022 )
- from SUSAN PETERSON -- TOP 1000 REVIEWER : An extraordinary love story ( 5.0 out of 5 stars )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Susan Z -- More than I could have ever expected : Josie lost her parents when she was 9, so the holidays are always very difficult. On a fateful day, Josie has a biking accident and runs into Max, literally. They have a whirlwind romance for a few days before he is scheduled to visit his parents in New York for Christmas. Rather than saying bye, Max leaves with nothing more than a short good bye note. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2022 )
- 2.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Miserable : It is a well written story and kept me reading it but that's where my good review ends. It was not as described. I bought " an uplifting Christmas romance". It wasn't uplifting. It was miserable from start to finish. You expect certain things from Christmas romance stories and this did not deliver. I want a feel good story when I buy a book like this. I was not expecting this. It has the normal will they won't they but then it goes for a different ending to the story which was unexpected and unwanted and so I felt let down by this book. This book certainly wouldn't cheer you up. Would not recommend if you're looking for a feel good story ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 9, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Beev -- The best book I have read this year : I honestly don't know where to start with this review, but I know I have to write one because this book deserves it. Heartwarming and heartbreaking, I fell in love with Josie and Max, and all of their family and friends. But this book did something that few books make me do. I sobbed. The writing was so good and the emotional pull so strong, I honestly blubbed like a baby. This is a book that is going to be staying with me for a while. A stunning debut. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Leigh -- Not a light hearted read : I really enjoyed this book. It was very well written and the pace of the story was good. I liked that we joined the characters for a few days and then caught up with them again. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 25, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Heartwarming and heartbreaking : I came to this book via recommendation and I'm so glad I did. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 29, 2021 )
